Jewellery after care advice from Thomas William Jewellery

General

  1. Do not wear your jewellery in the spa, shower, bath, swimming pools, sea etc. This reduces the build up of residues on your jewellery and can reduced the wear on gold and rhodium plating and prevent chlorine damage.

  2. Remove jewellery for sports, DIY and physical activities – though metals and precious stones are durable, they can still be chipped, cracked or damaged. Some stones are surprisingly soft and can scratch, and even diamonds can break.

  3. Keep jewellery away from household cleaning products and other abrasive chemicals.

  4. Remove jewellery to sleep – snags can easily occur and many an earring has been lost in the bedsheets.

  5. Have your jewellery professionally cleaned regularly, and use jeweller recommended products for at-home cleaning. If in doubt, lukewarm soapy water and a soft bristled brush such as a soft toothbrush can be used to clean most jewellery. Always plug the drain first! Dry with a soft cloth or hairdryer – airdrying may result in watermarks.

  6. Have your valuable and sentimental jewellery inspected regularly – this can help to catch repairs early, such as worn claws and wobbly stones, and may prevent further damage or loss of stones.

  7. Put your jewellery on last – after bath products, moisturisers, sunscreen, perfumes and so on – these products can cause damage and discolouration of jewellery. This is especially true of pearls which are very sensitive to chemical damage.

  8. Have valuable jewellery regularly professionally valued and keep jewellery insured (check the upper single item limit of your home insurance and ensure additional insurance is in place where needed). Keep your valuation paperwork safe and up-to-date.

  9. Store your jewellery carefully. Wrapping in cloth or tissue or storing in separate compartments helps to reduce potential damage.

  10. If you think you may have accidentally damaged your jewellery, take it for a professional inspection as soon as possible (you may wish to avoid wearing it until after inspection).

White gold and gold plated jewellery

GOLD PLATED JEWELLERY

Gold plating or vermeil wears off over time, how quickly will depend on how much wear your jewellery is subject to. When the colour of your jewellery begins to dull or change it is time to take your jewellery for replating. Thomas William Jewellery offer a gold plating service at a reasonable cost. We are not responsible for plating wearing off and reserve the right to charge again. It is impossible to set an expected time limit on how long plating should last.

WHITE GOLD

White gold keeps its bright white colour through a process called Rhodium plating. Rhodium plating will need to be redone by a professional jeweller on a regular basis. How often will depend on how much wear your jewellery is subject to and the quality of the original alloy. If your items are yellow gold and we have rhodium plated them, the plating will wear off very quickly due to the strong colour underneath. This is not a fault and you will be charged again. If your white gold jewellery begins to dull or appear yellow it is time to take it for replating. Thomas William Jewellery offers a rhodium plating service at a reasonable cost. We use a high palladium content white gold in all our manufactures and repairs. Other jewellers and retailers may supply a lower quality alloy resulting in a yellower natural colour. The rhodium plating will appear to wear off quicker if applied to these alloys. This is not a TWJ fault, this is an original manufacturer issue and we are not responsible. Your items will need to be replated more regularly if this is the case. If your item is resized by us, we will do our best to match the alloy originally used however, this can be extremely difficult and we will use our own alloy which may appear noticeable when the plating has worn off. This is not a fault; this is due to a poor alloy used during original manufacture. If you are dissatisfied with our work, we will remove the piece added, offer a refund and you are welcome to return the item to the original manufacturer to use the same poor-quality alloy at your own expense.
